What Is The Lanterman Act?

The Lanterman Act, formally known as the Lanterman Developmental Disabilities Services Act, is a California state law that guarantees individuals with developmental disabilities the right to access services and supports that enable them to live independently and productively, essentially outlining their rights and responsibilities while establishing regional centers as primary points of contact for individuals and their families to access these services; it essentially ensures people with developmental disabilities have the same legal rights as everyone else and can advocate for their needs through these regional centers

Self-Determination Program

The motto of California’s Self-Determination Program (SDP) is “nothing about you without you“. This means that the participant is the most important person in making decisions about their life and services.
The SDP’s principles are:
- Freedom: Participants have the same rights as all citizens, including where to live, how to spend their time, and who to choose as family and friends.
- Authority: Participants decide how to spend their budget for services and supports.
- Support: Participants choose the people and supports that will help them live, work, and play in their community.
- Responsibility: Participants are accountable for their budget and the way money is spent.
- Confirmation: Participants are the most important person when making plans for their life.
The SDP helps people with disabilities and their families have more control and flexibility over the services and supports they need.
